Abstract
Geographical Information Systems analysing routinely georeferenced emergency data provide a highly valuable source of information and useful analysis tool not only for routing purposes in emergency care systems. The applicability of GIS-based emergency registries have been demonstrated during long-term research cooperations with emergency medical service systems in Germany, the USA and Spain: (i) for performance assessments of emergency care systems, (ii) for the analysis of demographic and socioeconomic factors influencing demand for acute care and (iii) for the development of health monitoring and early warning systems.
