Abstract

This paper reports a comparison of three different CNC machining strategies for the efficient generation of toolpaths directly from the point cloud without the need of surface reconstruction. The developed strategies (NRS, RBS, and SBS) have been rigorously tested for complex freeform part models with varying geometric complexities to compare the performance parameters such as machining time, surface finish, and code length. Suitable recommendation has been made to choose the efficient strategy for a specific type of freeform point-based surface model.
