Abstract

A biostratigrafical analysis through mesofossils in Upper Cretaceous deposits in the quarry Blom (Berg en Terblijt, near Maastricht).
Upper Cretaceous deposits (Nekum-chalk) and part of the Meerssen-chalk) have been analysed in their contents of mesofossils (fossils and fossil-fragments of 1,0 - 2,4 mm). Correlating the results found in this analysis with results of previous similar studies in the Upper Cretaceous deposits of South-limburg (The Netherlands) we see a remarkable resemblance in mesofossil-content. Based on this content a division of the analysed deposits into 6 layers (a, b, c, d, e and f) has been made, each with a characteristic mesofossil-content.
Correlation of the above mentioned results also shows that lithological characteristics of the Upper Cretaceous deposits are less constant as often assumed, even over short distance: hard-grounds split up or disappear and fossilgritlayers change in macrofossil-content.
Mesofossil-content changes less, so it seems, over larger distances so that correlation is possible over larger distances while the deposits undergo strong lithological alternation.
