Abstract

The aim of this chapter is to summarize and describe key findings and theoretical models of the intergenerational effects of maternal eating disorders (EDs). In particular, this chapter will focus on effects of developmental aspects, across the spectrum of psychological, cognitive, and eating behavior development. We will also touch on the limited literature on EDs in children of mothers with EDs. Although the last 20 years have seen a growth in research in this field, many questions remain unanswered.
