Abstract

This paper proposes a dual-spiral magnetic loop antenna tuned to 2.45 GHz for implantable medical devices. It is a predominantly magnetic antenna system miniaturized to 35% of a loop in free-space. Simulations in ANSYS HFSS using a three-layer tissue phantom model demonstrate excellent tuning and impedance matching. The radiation pattern is directed strongly upwards out of the phantom model. When implanted, the device has an efficiency of 0.2%, maximum gain of -23 dB, and a maximum input power of 4.5 mW.
