Abstract
THAI - "Toe-to-Heel Air Injection" is a new short-distance displacement recovery process for heavy oil and bitumens. CAPRI is a catalytic variant of THAI, in which a catalyst is emplaced around the horizontal prodn. well. THAI and CAPRI each achieve nearly 8 API points increase, so that heavy oil undergoes a one-step, downhole conversion to an (almost)light oil. Test were conducted in a specially designed 3-D combustion cell. Two tracers were employed: deuterated water and a special orgs. mixt. The paper presents results of various bulk and mol. analyses performed on the core matrix residues and produced gases and liqs. Some of the variability in oil upgrading obsd. was due to distn., cracking and hydrogenation. Esp. noticeable was effective hydrogenation from H donation, or through water-gas shift, of the compds. cracked from asphaltenes. [on SciFinder (R)]
