Abstract

The nonlinear Kerr coefficient of a germania core optical fibre has been determined by measuring the phase shift induced by a laser diode pump on a HeNe probe in an all-fibre Mach-Zehnder interferometer. It has been demonstrated that this device may be operated as an optical tap. A predicted power-length product for 100% modulation of 11 Wm has been obtained.
