Abstract
This paper presents a case for the use of a Decision Support System (DSS) within the electronics manufacturing industry. The aim of the system discussed is to operate as an on-line decision tool for the shop floor, focusing on printed circuit card (PCC) fault diagnostics. The focus of the research is described with respect to industrial and academic priorities, and a hybrid framework for the design of such systems is introduced. Finally, a pilot study is undertaken and a prototype decision aid using ExpertRule is validated
