Abstract
Should critical diversity studies be distinct from diversity studies? Scholars who agree advocate it as a more politically active challenge to racialised, gendered and ableist organisational practice. A critical approach examines diversity's roots and critiques its enactment through concepts like EDI, analysing power, elitism and marginalisation within the field. Through this lens, ‘diversity’ is a set of ideas, practices and people that exert a form of power that shapes what is allowed and valued. By understanding and challenging privilege, seen at micro, meso and macro levels, critical diversity studies may offer an alternative to normalising practices that (re-)produce marginalisation.
