Abstract

This chapter establishes the state-of the-art regarding our knowledge of the intricate and complex interplay between appropriability and open innovation. To understand this important strategic relationship, we discuss the potential complementarities between open innovation and appropriability. We also examine some key tensions between open innovation and firms’ appropriation efforts, and how firms may attempt to resolve these tensions. We provide an overview of the prior literature and highlight a range of future research avenues to enrich our understanding this relationship.
