Abstract

Coagulation, oxidation and disinfection are common treatments in drinking water production. The ferrate ion (FeO4 2-) combines oxidation and coagulation. In this paper the removal of turbidity, TOC, E. coli and color by ferrate dosing to six Dutch water types is described. Also the improvement of UV-transmission was investigated. Jar tests showed poor coagulation under the chosen conditions, but a reasonable amount of UV absorbing and color components could be removed. Furthermore a 3-log inactivation of E. Coli could be achieved. Due to its oxidizing properties, application of ferrate results in AOC formation.
