Abstract

Climate change mitigation in power systems is achieved by decarbonizing power generation, transmission, distribution, and consumption. In this article, the key elements for decarbonization are introduced and described, considering power system planning and operation perspectives and different options in terms of energy resources, network topologies, and enabling technologies. Recent progress toward decarbonization of power grids is also discussed, as well as existing challenges to achieve full decarbonization while satisfying power system planning and operation principles and requirements. Future trends with potential to boost power system decarbonization are described in the outlook.
