Abstract

STATCOM (Static Synchronous Compensator) and SSSC (Series Static Synchronous Compensator) are two new generation of FACTS devices based on Voltage Source Converter (VSC). In this paper, a novel analytical method based on the well-know equal-area criterion in studying their capability to improve power system oscillation stability is proposed and some useful analytical conclusions are presented. Simulation results of an example power system installed with a STATCOM-based stabilizer are given in part II of the paper to demonstrate the theory and analysis presented in the paper. Extension to more complicated case of multi-machine power systems is also discussed in part II.
