Abstract

The Cambridge Crystallographic Database (CSD) is introduced highlighting its importance in the area of structural chemistry and its place within the development of cheminformatics. The history of the development of the CSD is briefly described and its content is compared with that of other structural databases. The user interface and the software supporting the CSD is described. The contribution that the CSD has made to coordination chemistry through the provision of accurate and comprehensive crystal data is highlighted and the chapter is completed by a description of where the CSD underpins key and developing research areas in chemistry and materials.
