Abstract
Shared decision-making (SDM) is widely recommended in chronic diseases
such as multiple sclerosis (MS) in order to assess and consider the
patient’s priorities adequately. SDM presupposes decision competence.
Decision competence can be tested by the Adult Decision Making Competence
(A-DMC) battery. Decision competence depends on an intact working
memory, which is often affected in patients with MS. Consequently, any
treatment-related education following an SDM approach has to consider
that decision competence can be hampered in patients with MS. At the
same time, risk preferences of the neurologist may influence selection of
the right immunomodulatory treatment. These possible impact factors
should be reflected to guarantee the optimal individualized medical care.
