Backward-wave induced modulational instability in normal dispersion

Abstract

We study theoretically and numerically the coupled forward and backward wave nonlinear dynamics in a microring resonator and demonstrate modulational instability and frequency comb generation in the normal dispersion regime.

The linear stability analysis was also performed to get the insight on the system regimes. This allows us to estimate the detuning αsb and mode number µsb at which the first sideband will appear during laser sweeping√ (see fig 2). We also note that the µ and d2 appear in formulas as a united term d2µ2 giving out a simple 1/ d2 scaling for µsb. This work was supported by the Russian Science Foundation (Project 17-12-01413).
