Abstract

This chapter reviews approaches to the clinical assessment of pragmatic competence in childhood developmental disorders. It provides an overview of the types of pragmatic difficulties commonly observed in children with developmental disorders and critically explores various rationales for assessing pragmatic competence. A brief outline of some theoretical frameworks that inform clinical assessment practices is provided, including perspectives from health studies, psychology and linguistics. The features of a comprehensive clinical assessment of pragmatic competence are then described and discussed in relation to researchbased approaches. The chapter concludes with a discussion of future directions for research and highlights the opportunities for researcher-clinician collaboration.
