Abstract

COPPE/UFRJ develops a superconducting magnetic levitation vehicle (SML) named MagLev-Cobra. The project began last decade with a small-scale prototype. Presently a full-scale one is under construction. For traction, MagLev-Cobra uses a linear induction motor (LIM) [1]-[2] patented by UFRJ [3] due to its innovative geometry that contributes for the levitation. In this paper, the back-to-back converter used for the regenerative brak-ing is presented. This converter allows the return of energy generated during deceleration to the grid [4]. Results of the regenerative braking and DC braking for the linear induction motor are discussed.
