Abstract

Metabolomics has emerged as a powerful tool for assessing the ecological effects of contaminants in industrial effluents, particularly within plant systems. This chapter provides an overview of how metabolomics is employed to evaluate the impact of various pollutants, including pharmaceuticals, personal care products, pesticides, nanomaterials, and altered nutrient levels, on exposed organisms. By utilizing advanced analytical techniques such as nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and mass spectrometry (MS), environmental metabolomics workflows effectively identify alterations in metabolites caused by these contaminants. The chapter delves into the classification of industrial wastewater and corresponding treatment techniques, highlighting the integration of metabolomics with other omics approaches to enhance our understanding of the complex interactions between industrial pollution and the environment. It also addresses the challenges and opportunities in improving effluent treatment technologies through this advanced approach. The chapter concludes by discussing the future prospects of metabolomics in guiding the development of more sustainable and environmentally friendly waste management strategies, ultimately contributing to more effective ecological management practices.
