Abstract
This paper presents the results of a pilot study aimed at identifying whether the use of a Decision Support System (DSS), as an aid in fault diagnostics at the shop floor, is a viable company option. Based on the findings of the survey four key criteria are identified for use in ascertaining the applicability of DSSs namely; company size, rectification levels, quality systems and finally, use of Surface Mount Assemblies (SMA). The results fromt he survey are introduced, and a methodology for use in the initial evaluation phase for DSS applicability is presented
