N2 - Wavelets have previously received little attention regarding their use in the study of cyclic variability in combustion. This paper provides a short introduction to wavelets and presents the results, in the form of scalograms, of their application to a time series of net heat release values. Although wavelets have advantages over Fourier analysis in that they are capable of revealing transient behaviour, they appear to have shortcomings with respect to establishing sufficient confidence in the validity of the low-frequency features apparently present in the scalograms.
