Abstract
Agustín Barrios Mangoré remains one of Paraguay's foremost cultural figures and a central one in the international arena of music for the classical guitar. His work draws together threads of European Romantic, Classical and Latin American folkloric traditions through the carefully politicized persona of Chief Mangoré, 'the Paganini of the jungles of Paraguay'. He is examined here within the frame of the 200th anniversary of Paraguay's declaration of independence from Spain in 1811, the first country in Latin America to do so.
