Abstract

It is shown that the modal noise performance of multimode fibre data communication links incorporating lasers depends on the line coding used. The performance of a range of laser sources, including both vertical cavity surface emitting lasers and standard planar lasers are compared. Vertical cavity lasers provide the highest immunity to modal noise.
