Abstract
Disability is a reality for many people and ageing and becoming infirm is a reality for almost all the rest of us. However, being elderly or disabled needn’t stop us enjoying our cultural heritage, whether it’s viewing paintings, watching musicals or climbing a mountain. We just need to know where to go to make these activities possible, and how cultural sites can help support elderly and disabled people.
Accessible Vacations is primarily designed for people who are elderly and disabled and their families. It is also designed for public libraries and those who work with people who are elderly and disabled.
Importantly, Accessible Vacations is based on a model of access developed from recent research in this field , and describes five categories of access:
1)Visiting with friends and family
2)Education available
3)Information available
4)Access to spaces
5)Ease of mobility – both getting there and getting around
Accessible Vacations: Twelve National Parks is set out in two sections
Access Services
oThis includes chapters on accessible technologies, audio descriptions, special classes and performances, sign languages, support for people with learning disabilities, how to support people in museums, travel advise to and within cities and national parks, and practical facilities such as toilets and cafes in cultural sites.
National Parks
oThere will be a chapter each listing the access facilities, courses and tours at ten accessible national parks. N.B. As with the twelve major cities, I plan to expand these books in future to more national parks, as well as updating information on their facilities.
