Abstract

Objectives: The University of Bath conducted a survey to understand food insecurity among Bath and North East Somerset (B&NES) residents who are in receipt of Pension Credits.

Design and Methods: Surveys were sent to 2,753 B&NES Pension Credit recipients in February 2023. Three hundred and thirty responded, with most returning paper surveys (only 19 completed the survey online).

Results: Nearly half of respondents reported some degree of food insecurity over the past 12 months. Barriers to eating well included the cost of food and energy, physical or health issues, and lack of motivation. The most commonly accessed support was friends and family. Having fewer people to depend on, health issues, being younger, and not owning one’s own home, were all significantly correlated with food insecurity.

Conclusions: The key areas for intervention are improving financial support, social connection, and health.
