20Gb/s multilevel-coded signal transmission using directly-modulated laser diodes

Abstract

20Gbit/s data transmission over 20km of single mode fibre is demonstrated using direct multi-level modulation of a gain-coupled distributed-feedback laser. This allows a 1.7 times enhancement of transmission distance to 48km, compared to binary modulation.
