Abstract

This article provides an overview of German ecocriticism. It highlights the reluctance of literary scholars in Germany to engage in environmentally focused criticism and discusses the achievements and contribution of German ecocriticism. These include explicating a body of thought that shares much with American and British culture and adding to the range of perspectives and methodologies in the toolkit of the international community of scholars. This article describes the specific contributions to ecocriticism of several German writers including Hubert Zapf, Timo Müller, and Hartmut Böhme.
