Pair distribution function analysis of metallic powders for use in powder bed additive manufacture

In this rapid access application we performed room temperature, spinning capillary Pair Distribution Function (PDF) analysis of 5 semi-crystalline powders which are used in powder bed fusion Additive Manufacture (AM). This approach provided insight into the atomic level strain, the prevalence and atomic arrangement of amorphous regions as well as the locations and concentrations of oxygen contamination. Ultimately these powders make up the finished AM component, and therefore these properties have important implications for their structural and mechanical behaviour.

Key findings

The results will reveal that these AM powders are crystalline and therefore unsuited for PDF analysis. These insights were used as the basis of a further successful beam time application at I11.
