Pair distribution function analysis of metallic powders for use in powder bed additive manufacture

In this rapid access application we propose room temperature, spinning capillary Pair Distribution Function (PDF) analysis of 5 semi-crystalline powders which are used in powder bed fusion Additive Manufacture (AM). This approach will provide insight into the atomic level strain, the prevalence and atomic arrangement of amorphous regions as well as the locations and concentrations of oxygen contamination. Ultimately these powders make up the finished AM component, and therefore these properties have important implications for their structural and mechanical behaviour. The results will reveal which AM powders can be best characterised by PDF analysis, and will form the basis of an extensive testing regime to assess the impact of different powder production methods. This will include future I15-1 proposals, and will have the goal of enhancing powder manufacture and AM part characteristics.
