Bringing together experts in historical architecture, civil engineering and mathematical statistics, this project will investigate the utility of including documentary evidence of past floods into contemporary flood risk assessment. The research will focus on the River Avon and its historical interactions with the city of Bath. A hydraulic river model will be developed, representing the historical changes to the river and its management and will be used for estimating the discharge of past events for which only documentary evidence is available. A new statistical framework will be developed to combine the historical data with modern observations of recent flood events.
