The aim of the project is to investigate the causes of short maternity leave uptake among UK academics, with the generosity of the maternity policies offered by employers as one of the driving forces. We will create a bespoke data to compare in a rigorous econometric analysis the differences in uptake of leave of otherwise identical academics employed at UK institutions and differences in maternity leaves between academic and administrative employees within the same institutions.
