International Research Initiator Scheme - School and system level strategies for reducing educational inequalities in Mexico.

Project: Research-related funding

Project Details

The aim of this International Research Initiator Scheme proposal is to strengthen our connection with a network of contacts in Mexico to consolidate a partnership between UNAM and the University of Bath as the basis for developing a joint mixed methods bid for funds on the subject of educational inequalities in Mexico.

The aim of the research bid that would be developed is to generate strategies to ameliorate the impact of educational inequalities on young people’s lives in Mexico. To achieve this aim, the research would adopt a mixed methods design. In phase 1 of the study, we would analyse data from large-scale educational assessments to identify patterns in the factors associated with educational inequalities (due to gender, socioeconomic status, ethnicity, geography, etc.). Patterns identified in phase 1 would then inform phase 2 in terms of driving the selection of qualitative case study schools.

The project would seek to unveil and explain some of the most striking and educationally significant inequality patterns present in Mexico.

It is worth mentioning that the work of both PI’s focuses on low and middle income countries. Additionally, we would bring the expertise in quantitative (Andres Sandoval-Hernandez) and qualitative (Lizzi Milligan) methods that would allow us to conduct such a project.

The outputs of this International Research Initiator Scheme project would be:
• A first meeting during the conference of the Comparative and International Education Society (CIES).
• Participation in a research seminar series to take place in Mexico City.
• A research ‘sand pit’ in Mexico City.
• The UNAM-University of Bath joint bid for research funds (led by Bath researchers).
• A research ‘sand pit’ in Bath
• Promotion of the University of Bath as a destination for postgraduate students.
