Description

Training and dissemination on institutional care in Europe and good practice in the deinstitutionalisaton of young children
This project aimed to disseminate the results from two previous Daphne projects: a survey of 33 European countries which mapped the extent of institutionalisation(2002/017/C), and the analysis of good practices in de-institutionalising children in 8 partner countries(2003/046/C).
The aim was to disseminate these findings to a wider audience, through training, publications and a web-site. Training was offered to policy makers and practitioners in 8 countries with the most children under 3 years in institutional care. Training focused on developmental outcomes for children leaving institutions, and good practice in moving children to family-based care (eg: preventing further damage by abrupt relocation, highlighting the importance of developing appropriate community-based services to support families of origin caring for their child and to provide alternative family-based care when necessary for the safety and well-being of the child.
