Automated micro Fluid Dynamic Gauging (AmFDG) is a specialised measurement tool designed for measuring the thickness of soft layers deposited on porous and non-porous surfaces in situ and in real time. The operation is based on fluid mechanical principles and works in liquid environment. The automated system will allow measurements to be made on-the-fly with minimal manual input. In combination with computational modelling, measurements from AmFDG can also be employed to infer the mechanical strengths of the deposits.
The system also includes a membrane flow cell constructed using 316 stainless steel that can be operated at 4-5 bars absolute pressure, in both laminar and turbulent flow conditions. The design of the flow cell should also allow for the usage of both ceramic as well as polymeric flat sheet membranes.
