Project Details

Description

The emerging futures project engages academics, practitioners, and youth to jointly explore opportunities/challenges facing young people in a rapidly changing world of work. A key component of this project is to organise public engagement events in which the team will focus on a range of issues facing young people from skills gap to migration; from education to employability; and from diversity to social trends and so on. Key stakeholders will have the opportunity to extend their research/ideas to youth problems and show impact. Project activities will not only have an academic impact but also a broader effect on society in addressing grand challenges, of which youth remains a significant area of concern. The theme of this event directly connects with UN SDG 4 on inclusive and equitable education (target 4.4) and SDG 8 around employment, decent work, and social protection (target 8.6) in which youth is a critical component.

Our ongoing theme, ‘empowering youth in a changing world of work,’ aims to generate ideas and provide valuable insights into the shifting dynamics of the job market, emphasising the importance of adaptability and continuous learning for young people. This theme will focus on three key areas relevant to youth: skill development, diversity, and careers as the fundamental building blocks for an emerging future. By bringing together academics, thought leaders, and aspiring professionals, the project serves as a catalyst for meaningful discussions, collaboration, and proactive steps towards a brighter future. We are committed to making a tangible impact on policy-making and engaging policy makers to ensure that the insights and ideas generated during the workshop contribute to the formulation of effective policies for the benefit of young people.

An emerging futures lab will be established under the Future of Work Research centre at Bath.
