Description

French-British PhD studentship, administered by the Direction Générale de l’Armement (DGA) in France.

Layman's description

The objective of this PhD is to improve seabed characterisation with bathymetric echosounders by better extracting key information from acoustic backscatter signals. This project combines sonar design, experimental validation and field surveys and theoretical characterisation.

Key findings

This project demonstrates the use of a multi-frequency bathymetric echosounder in varied, complex terrains. This is backed by published theoretical explanations of the key acoustic backscatter parameters.
