Personal profile

Research interests

Optical Fibres

I design, fabricate and study Photonic Crystal Fibres (PCFs), including Hollow Core Fibres. These optical fibres contain a microstructure on the scale of the wavelength of light which allows unprecedented control of the propagation of light in the fibre. My particular interests are in using PCFs for new lasers and light sources, with applications from fundamental metrology and quantum information to imaging for medical and life sciences.

Open Source Hardware

I investigate, develop and support Open Source Hardware for science. I am a member of the core development team of the OpenFlexure project, an open-source initiative focused on development of 3D printed, laboratory-grade digital microscopes and positioning stages, making high-quality microscopy accessible to all.
