Personal profile

Research interests

I am a consultant rheumatologist at the Royal National Hospital for Rheumatic Diseases and senior lecturer in the department of Pharmacy and Pharmacology. I graduated from the University of Bristol with a BSc in Anatomical Science before undertaking my medical degree at the same institution.

My research interests centre on improving the assessment and treatment of psoriatic arthritis. Psoriatic arthritis is a form of arthritis that affects approximately one in five people living with psoriasis causing pain, stiffness and damage to the joints, tendons and spine. Left untreated psoriatic arthritis causes significant pain, reduced function, impaired quality of life and work disability.

The overarching aim of my research is to improve the lives of people living with arthritis through improved detection (diagnosis), assessment (patient reported, clinical and imaging) and treatment strategies. I work with industry, the NHS, charities and across university departments to answer clinically important questions. My current research interests focus on:

  • Early detection of disease and enhanced surveillance to improve outcome
  • Precision medicine through improved treatment selection, refining composite measures to improve assessment and treatment strategies
  • Understanding the natural course of disease, prognosis and evolution of damage
  • Effect of biologics and targeted synthetic drugs in PsA

I am accepting students who would like to undertake research projects of any duration up to and including PhD studies. I also welcome collaborations from other disciplines where there is an opportunity to advance knowledge across specialities.
