My research takes place at the intersection between security, technology, politics & society.
I'm interested in how technologies and societies are co-produced - and more specifically, in how these sociotechnical interactions condition security practices & modes of technological warfare. I'm also particularly interested in techno-futures and how imaginaries of futures (that can be realised through technology) are co-constitutive of our techno-discourse/practice in the present.
My thesis asks: How can the development of convergence technologies and the evolution of a particular techno-scientific mode of future war in the Third Offset, be understood through the interaction of socio-technical imaginaries in elite level discourse within the US military-defence establishment?
Previously, my work has covered a range of issues including: the development and use of autonomous weaponry; biosecurity and the military application of advanced biotech; biometric surveillance; taboo weaponry; the role of technology in the practice of war and state violence; water security and environmental sustainability.
In addition to my academic work, I work on practical biosecurity and biosafety matters - consulting on best practice, project screening & RRI. I've worked on international projects with BioSecu.re & with the iGEM Foundation. In 2017, I completed a Research Fellowship with VERTIC.
Prior to joining the Centre for Technology and War at Bath University, I worked for several years in various professional and NGO organisations. I hold an MSc. in Global Security from the University of Glasgow as well as an MA in Central and East European Studies from the same institution.
