Research interests

Tom Gatehouse is a writer, translator and researcher with a background in Latin America. He is currently Senior Writer at Tobacco Tactics, part of the Tobacco Control Research Group at the University of Bath and a partner in the global watchdog network STOP.

In this role he is responsible for researching, writing and reviewing pages for the Tobacco Tactics knowledge exchange platform, working on academic research projects, and delivering other TCRG outputs such as the annual TIMRA course. He also contributes to media outputs and helping to maintain the Tobacco Tactics website.

He has a longstanding interest in harmful industries, being the author of the book The Heart of Our Earth: Community resistance to mining in Latin America, which was published in March 2023. He is also the editor of the book Voices of Latin America: Social movements and the new activism (2019) and translator of Bernardo Kucinski's novels The Past is an Imperfect Tense (2020) and The Congress of the Disappeared (forthcoming in 2025).

He was educated at the University of Sussex (BA) and the University of Cambridge (MPhil).
