Personal profile

Research interests

Dr Timothy (Tim) M Harrell is a Lecturer in Mechanical Engineering, specialising in experimental mechanics and advanced modelling techniques.

Tim received his Ph.D. degree in engineering from the University of Southampton in 2020 researching lightning induced damage to carbon fibre reinforced polymer composites. Afterwards, he worked as a Post-Doctoral Research Assistant in the Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering department at the University of Virginia where he works on manufacturing/characterising carbon fibres, high temperature digital image correlation, and characterising nylon fibres.

Tim's research centres around the development of advanced techniques for full-field experiments and numerical simulations in composite materials and structures. With a focus on fibre-reinforced composites, his research involves several industrial sectors like aerospace, wind turbine and nuclear energy. Areas of research interests include:

  • Lightning Damage in Carbon Fibre Reinforced Polymers
  • Post-buckling analysis
  • Carbon fibre manufacturing and analysis
  • Additive Manufacturing
  • Thermography
  • Material Characterization
  • Grӧbner Basis
