Research Interests
My research interests involve the design and construction of front-end instrumentation for millimetre-wave molecular line astronomy and the fabrication of micromachined detector devices required for such instrumentation. A long term collaboration with the University of Kent and the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory led to the development of three superconducting mixer receivers, spanning 210-510 GHz, which all operated as facility instruments on the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope, Hawaii. We have recently finished the construction of an 810 GHz receiver for the TIRGO telescope on the Gornergrat, Switzerland.
Other applications at terahertz frequencies are waiting for cost-effective technology to become available. For both specialised scientific applications such as astronomy and mass-market applications such as communications, it is evident that future generations of instrumentation will require a more integrated approach to device fabrication. I am interested in the use of microfabrication and micromachining methods to make not just high frequency devices, but also the embedding circuits in which they are mounted.
