Research interests

Dr. Biscayahas twenty-three years of experience as an Architect and UrbanDesigner (Chartered Architect ARB and RIBA) specialised in production and coordination of information andspatialdata visualisation. Her research focuses onDataapplicationsin developing Smart Urban Futures that integrate the urban and rural socio-economic and physical infrastructures to support communities, stakeholders and decision makers. Recent and current projects include ESCR, Technology Enhanced Stakeholder Collaboration for Supporting Risk-Sensitive Sustainable Urban Development TRANSCEND, (GCRF, £970K), Co-Network for Building Multi-Institutional Collaboration for Creating Resilient Environments and Communities against Climate Change,£200K, AHRC Design Accelerators: Design the Green Transition 2023, The value of design for sustainable housing – towards a smart place demonstrator £50K and URF 2023, Leading the way in Smart Home Research and Innovation programme £300K and Smart Infrastructure, £256K under the Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP); BREATHE-Cities project, £60K, UK Evidence Fund, Research and Innovation for Development in ASEAN (RIDA) and AIRWISE project, £100K, International Science Partnerships Fund (UK-ISPF).

 

Sarawas a member of the Smart Urban Futures (SURF) UoS research group from 2018-22. The research group works on The Future of Cities and provides models for urban futures in areas. She is also an ARB (Architects Registration Board) UK Adaptation Assessor, International RIBA (Royal Institute of British Architects) Validation board member, Athena Swan Chartered Reviewer, member of WiA-Women in Architecture and collaborator with the THINKLAb at UoS. 

Sara is currently the Director of Studies BSc Architecture at the University of Bath previously she was Subject Area Leader of Architecture and the Built Environment at the University of Huddersfield, UK and before thatHead of Architecture and Design at the University of Salford, UK. Since 2020 she has been involved in enhancing inclusiveness and equality in the workplace as Chair of the Women’s Voice Network and as Chartered Reviewer for Athena Swan Advanced Higher Education. In addition, she is a Guest Professor at ISCTE IUL - University of Lisbon, Portugal, Department of Architecture and Urbanism, M.Arch on Smart Ecological Urban Green and Blue Corridors. 

Recently she has been appointed as a Council member of the Architectural Association School of Architecture and Degree Awarding Committee member.

 

Sara has a number of refereed articles publications. Her latest book is the Manchester Ship Canal, Back to the Future for Disused European Waterways, ISBN 978-3-7315-1084-0 (Elkadi, H and Biscaya, S, 2021), KIT. She has also supervised a number of PhD students.
