Sam is a doctoral candidate in the Department of Education. His research focuses on the higher education transitions of British youth in different social and geographical contexts.

Sam is interested in:

  • higher education policy and research
  • contemporary social class identities
  • social and cultural geographies

Sam joined the Department of Education as a PhD student in October 2016. His research, under the supervision of Dr Michael Donnelly and Professor Hugh Lauder, explores how the higher education transitions of British youth are mediated by individuals' social and geographical contexts and trajectories.

He worked in a similar role at the University of East Anglia, where he also completed his MRes degree in social science research methods. Sam has worked for various arts education charities, notably as a musical director for the Lamproom Theatre (Yorkshire) and more recently as a trustee for the Norwich Puppet Theatre. In 2018, Sam undertook a four-month UKRI policy internship at the Department for Education, Westminster.

Sam holds a BA (Hons) in English Literature from the University of Lincoln and a MRes in Social Science Research Methods from the University of East Anglia. His masters research focused on the social and spatial mobilities, and educational experiences of young forced migrants in England. His Master's research comprised an in-depth case study, focusing on one young forced migrant's geographical mobility and access to education in England
