PhD Candidate

I am a doctoral candidate (2016-2020) in the Department of Education under the supervision of Dr. Michael Donnelly and Professor Hugh Lauder. My research is funded by the Economic and Social Research Council and examines how British young people's imagined futures are shaped by their imaginaries of place, space and class, and their experiences of im/mobility. Prior to joining the University of Bath in 2016, I completed the MRes programme in social science research methods at the University of East Anglia (2016). I also hold a BA (Hons) degree in English Literature from the University of Lincoln (2013).

During my time at Bath, I undertook a four-month UKRI Policy Internship in 2018 with the government Department for Education in Westminster. I worked in the Department's Strategy Unit researching policy on access to higher education in England and Wales. I also worked part-time as a research asssistant in 2019 for a project led by Dr. Michael Donnelly and colleagues at the University of Bath. This project was initiated by the Social Mobility Commission and resulted in a published report on young people's access to and engagement in extra-curricular activities.

In August 2020, I joined the Department of Geography & Environment as a Research Associate in geography, sociology and education. I am currently working on the Leverhulme Trust-funded ‘Tutored Childhoods’ project led by Professor Sarah Holloway. The project investigates the growth of private tuition in the UK and examines how private tuition usage is mediated by children’s social class background, ethnicity and geographic region. In March 2021, I passed my PhD viva.
