Dr Dunn studied for a BSc and a PhD at The University of Bath. He started his research career as a Research Assistant after his finishing PhD before joining The University of Bath as a Lecturer in 1986.

Research

Dr Dunn’s research involves developing novel security assessment and control mechanisms for extended electrical power networks. Recently, this has been focussed on the effects of the introduction of sustainable energy generators (renewables such as wave, wind, and solar) into such networks.

This type of research is carried out collaboratively with many colleagues at other universities in the UK and elsewhere, primarily through research teams such as EPSRC funded SuperGen Consortia.

The current research covers enhanced stability control using “Wide-Area Measurements”, critical cluster identification and intelligent agents to achieve enhanced dynamic performance of future electrical power systems. As a member of the SuperGen - Energy Storage Consortium, Dr Dunn’s research is looking at hybrid energy storage algorithms to create energy stores with novel dynamic and electrical characteristics.

He is also engaged with industry through a Knowledge Transfer Partnership with William’s Grand Prix Engineering. This work introduces fly-wheel energy storage to mass transport haulage systems.

Recent journal publications have centred around the use of electrical energy storage devices being used to improve the control range of power electronics based reactive power compensation equipment.
