Research interests

My research focuses on the development of spatial statistical methods and open-source software for disease surveillance, and has directly informed strategic policy in reducing disease burden in several countries. Past projects include the development of modeling architectures to understand the spatio-temporal patterns and identify targets for intervention of malaria in Africa, leptospirosis in Brazil, and cancer in Australia. I have worked on the development of a number of R packages for disease modeling, detection of clusters, and travel-related spread of disease, and I am the author of SpatialEpiApp, a Shiny web application for the analysis of spatial and spatio-temporal disease data.

Teaching interests

I have taught biostatistics and spatial statistics courses at both undergraduate and graduate levels at universities in United Kingdom, Australia and Ethiopia, and I have been invited to deliver training courses on disease mapping and R at international workshops. 

I am the author of the book Geospatial Health Data: Modeling and Visualization with R-INLA and Shiny published by Chapman & Hall/CRC Biostatistics Series.
