Research interests

Dr Oliver Pountney is a Senior Lecturer (Associate Professor) in the Department of Mechanical Engineering. Oliver’s research focuses on thermal management of technologies that facilitate the decarbonisation of power generation and aircraft propulsion, specifically:

  • Gas turbines – blade cooling, compressor cavity flows, and mainstream-purge aerodynamics
  • Additively-manufactured heat exchangers
  • Thermal management of hydrogen fuel cells for aircraft propulsion

Research highlights include:

  • Award of a 50th Anniversary Prize Fellowship (University of Bath)
  • Two x American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) Best Paper Awards (2011 and 2021)
  • Two x patents with Airbus

Oliver’s research has been carried out in collaboration with Siemens Energy, Rolls-Royce and GKN Aerospace through various industrially-funded and EPSRC supported projects.
