Nigel Cooksley

Nigel has a BEng in Mechanical Engineering with hands-on workshop skills and experience in and passion for design, assembly and fabrication of tools and components with a strong emphasis on Repairing, Re-using and Recycling.  

With a background in teaching Mechanical Engineering and Mathematics in further education, he has recently completed Bootcamps in Data Science, honing his digital skills on AI/Machine Learning projects using Python programming language for algorithm development.   

His PhD will involve developing a wireless sensor network to monitor tool condition and applying Machine Learning models to the extracted optical, vibration and acoustic emission data.  This will enable mitigation of significant energy waste from machine tools' premature disposal traditionally gauged by the machinist 'feeling' and 'listening'.
