Personal profile

Research interests

I joined PoLIS in 2012. I became Deputy Head of Department in 2015 and Head of Department in 2016. My research focuses on Euroscepticism and on the Radical Right in contemporary Europe.

In 2011, prior to arriving in Bath, I co-founded the Academic Association of Contemporary European Studies (UACES) Collaborative Research Network (CRN) on Euroscepticism. This network has led to two major special issues on the topic that I have co-edited as well as two recently Routledge published edited collections in the field.

In recent years I been invited to speak at various major international conferences by networks such as The European People’s Party (EPP), the German Civic Education Trust, Networking European Citizenship Education, The German Council on Foreign Relations (DGAP) and The French Institute of International Relations.

I have made numerous international, national and regional media appearances with the BBC, France24 and Sky in relation to French elections, Brexit and other EU referenda, as well as the rise of Euroscepticism and the radical right.

I am co-convener of the Political Studies Association French Politics and Policy Specialist group and am co-organiser of the prestigious UACES annual conference which takes place at the University of Bath in September 2018.

My latest publication is the co-edited Routledge Handbook of Euroscepticism with Ben Leruth and Simon Usherwood: https://www.routledge.com/The-Routledge-Handbook-of-Euroscepticism/Leruth-Startin-Usherwood/p/book/9781138784741
