I am a doctoral researcher using Rhetorical Political Analysis (RPA) to explore how the elite-level case was made for/against EU membership. In my research, I analyse political rhetoric to examine how the advocates and opponents of British membership made their petition for the UK to stay/withdraw from the European integration project.

In my thesis, I adopt a long-view approach to explore the nature of political rhetoric on Europe during critical moments for Britain’s membership. The timescale for my thesis covers key flashpoints during the early years of membership (the 1975 referendum campaign) and the latter ones (the 2016 referendum campaign). In addition to a focus on rhetoric, my thesis also speaks to aspects of British political history and political economy.
