Research interests

I am Professor of Strategic Risk Management at the University of Bath. Formerly, I held academic positions at the Universities of Swansea, Glasgow, and Massey (New Zealand), and professional accountancy positions in the private and public sectors. My scholarly research on risk and insurance has been published in over 80 academic journals, including leading publications such as the Journal of Financial and Quantitative Analysis, Journal of Financial Intermediation, Journal of Banking and Finance, Journal of International Business Studies, Journal of Management Studies, Academy of Management Perspectives, British Journal of Management, Business Ethics Quarterly, Business History, Journal of Financial Services Research, and the Journal of Risk and Insurance. Additionally, I am thrice winner of the Geneva Association/Shin Foundation Research Excellence Award. Over the last decade, I have also raised research funds of approximately £500,000 from UK and international public and private sector sources.

In 2011, I was awarded the Kenneth J Black Jr Distinguished Service Award for services to the International Insurance Society (IIS). In 2017-2018 I was awarded a six month sabbatical scholarship to conduct research on the economic history of insurance at Umeå University, Sweden.

In addition, I have been appointed as consultant for several financial, governmental, and other organizations both in the UK and overseas, and employed as an expert witness in a major international insurance legal case. I am also Associate Editor of the British Accounting Review, the flagship academic journal of the British Accounting and Finance Association (BAFA), and on the editorial board of the Geneva Papers: Issues and Practice.

In October 2019, I was conferred the title of Doctor Honoris Causa in recognition of my scholarly research in the fields of risk and insurance by Umeå University, Sweden.
